Machu Picchu! - Day Four: Hiking Day One

Starting altitude: ~11,000 feet
Ending Altitude: 12,705 feet
Distance walked: 6 miles

Today was an amazing but tough first day, intended to acclimate the group to the altitude.  Our group is pretty evenly matched and nobody had to ride a mule.  (Riding a mule might be fun, though.)

Our group consists of 4 Scots, 2 Aussies, 1 German, 5 Americans, and of course our 2 Peruvian tour guides and mule handler.  Ages range from late 20's to late 50's.

The views are breathtaking; words do not suffice.  A sampling of pictures can be found below.  The mountain pictures are the view from our lodge. ;)

Tomorrow we do a short but steep hike to a glacial lake.  I plan to jump in!
