Machu Picchu! - Day Seven: Hiking Day Four

Starting Altitude: 12,812 feet
Ending Altitude: 9,414 feet
Total Distance: 6 miles

Today's trek was down, down, down from the mountains into the rain forest.  We made it into the rain forest after about 90 or so minutes.  Most of my pictures today are of plant life; had a special friend on my mind, it seems.  I will throw in a few of me and some of the views, of course.

Today was the first day we really had to deal with rain.  The trails were slippery and muddy, and we experienced light rain for the last hour of the trip.

Still, it was worth it.  When we arrived at the next lodge, our hosts were preparing a barbecue.  The oven was basically a fire pit where hot stones had been set to absorb heat from coals all day.  The coals were then removed, food was added, and the whole thing was covered with cardboard and raw earth for about an hour while we cleaned up.  As for the food, well, we had several types of baked potatoes (over 3500 varieties here), lamb, chicken, pork, and you guessed it - guinea pig!  You'll see a picture of that below.

We spent the rest of the afternoon lounging, as tomorrow's descent continues gradually over about 11 miles.

We expect to visit an organic coffee plantation at some point; should be fun!
